Balance disorders can strike at any age, but are most common as you get older. Your ear is a complex system of bone and cartilage. Within it is a network of canals. These are called semicircular Sensory information about motion, equilibrium, and spatial orientation is provided by the vestibular apparatus, which in each ear includes the utricle, saccule, and three semicircular canals. The utricle and saccule detect gravity (information in a vertical orientation) and linear movement. Vestibular Disorders Section Overview The Section of Vestibular Disorders provides a comprehensive multi-specialty approach to the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular disorders and balance problems. The balance system is complex and depends on the integration of visual, inner ear, and sensory information from the joints and muscles.

Thus, hodology and cytoarchitectonic features appear to be separately regulated in the vestibular complex of the chicken embryo, possibly through different sets of positional specification mechanisms. Sixty-nine percent of the tested neurons, scattered through all nuclei of the vestibular complex, Accepted 14 August 2009 modified their responsiveness to glutamate in the presence of NA. The vestibular system is a highly conserved sensory system in vertebrates that is largely responsible for maintenance of one's orientation in space, posture, and balance and for visual fixation of objects during motion.

•The vestibular system is a balanced system. •Effects of activity from one vestibular organ are balanced by effects from the other. •A vestibular imbalance will cause overstimulation on one side and slow tonic deviation of the eyes away from that side. •The tonic nature of the movement induced by the vestibular
Balance is achieved and maintained by a complex set of sensorimotor control systems that include sensory input from vision (sight), proprioception (touch), and the vestibular system (motion, equilibrium, spatial orientation); integration of that sensory input; and motor output to the eye and body muscles.

The vestibular cortex differs in various ways from other sensory cortices. It consists of a network of several distinct and separate temporoparietal areas. Its core region, the parietoinsular vestibular cortex (PIVC), is located in the posterior insula and retroinsular region and includes the parietal operculum. The superior vestibular nucleus is a large cell group extending from the caudal pole of the parabrachial complex to the level of the rostral tip of lobule 10 of the cerebellum (Figs. 12.5, 12.6). For much of its rostrocaudal extent is lies dorsal to the lateral vestibular nucleus.
